Wargaming Rules

Over on my other blog I've written quite few posts about editing wargame rules. The two key posts are:

One word on warning, to be legible the image above is probably best viewed full screen:

There are two reasons why you may wish to look at these posts.  Firstly, you may be interested in how I go about editing rule sets.  Secondly, you may wish to find out more about a smashing set of fast play ACW rules that are available as a free download.

Greed And Envy :: Campaign Rules

These rules come courtesy of Italian DBMM player Lorenzo Mele.  Unsurprisingly it involves the Roman Empire; specifically, the middle Imperial period circa 250 AD.
Unlike the other campaigns I’ve posted this system is not a one-day campaign system.  It requires five players and a non-playing Umpire. The campaign is limited to five one year turns and has a nice approach to alliances, raids and major invasions.
Let me know what you think.

Terrain Cards

On Monday I mentioned that I was going to post the terrain cards created by John Davies to add extra variety to his  Balkan's campaign

When we played the Balkans campaign last Sunday John turned up with a laminated deck of twenty cards.  Deciding the terrain was really quick.  It took minutes to shuffle the pack and turn four cards. A great idea.
John has a lot of Arab armies so it didn’t surprise me when he told me he’d also produced a set of desert terrain cards:
The cards use the standard DBMM abbreviations for terrain types.  I hope you find these as useful as we did.

An Empire Building Campaign System

My last post “A Campaign For The Balkans 1370 AD” has been well received and to a couple of people asking if I’d publish their campaign systems.  One such request came from Peter Barrett of Canberra Games Society.

His system is based on Roman expansion in the 1st century BC but is equally applicable to any expanding empire, including mid 4th century BC Macedonia, the Byzantine Empire of Justinian I, the early days of the Arab Caliphate, the Seljuk Empire, the Mongol Empire or the Empire of Timur.

A Campaign For The Balkans 1370 AD

Last Sunday I was due to play in a one day, six player campaign devised by John Davies.  Needless to say it didn’t happen.  A week before we had seven players and by the the time I turned up at the club we had three.  Flu had accounted for two of the seven leaving us with an odd number and so a couple more dropped out.

The scenario and system is really rather elegant and applicable to more than just DBMM as you can see from John’s original design:
With John’s permission, I’ve hacked it around a bit to fit better as a web page and posted it below together with a print version:
If you want to see how the campaign plays a detailed report has now been posted.  This includes an alternative set of teams.  There’s now a also deck of terrain cards to add further variety.
