15 mm Byzantine Infantry Commanders (Donnington "Originals")

Introduction

These complete the commanders for my "fantasy" Byzantine army for Art de la Guerre (ADLG). At 200 points each army is allowed three commanders. I finished two mounted commanders early last month, so I now have four commanders: one spare in case I ever play a 300 point game (very unlikely).

My intention is to use these for the Byzantine armies of Justinian to Nikephoros a five-hundred year span marked by frequent changes in arms and armour. Accordingly, I’ve opted for models whose equipment is indicative rather than strictly historically accurate. Even so, I’m reasonably confident that each figure will be plausible for at least some point within that period!

Painting notes, flags & standards

Firstly, I wanted the shields to feature stylised, bright, and bold colour schemes as befits a commander and his retinue. Even so, I chose a deep red (DecoArt Christmas Red - DCA20) and a golden yellow (DecoArt Buttercream - DCA 117) to keep the colours saturated but not too bright. I used the same colours for the flag & the Draco standard.

The flag is available as a free download along with lots of colour variants and there are also versions with and without squared tails if you prefer.

The Draco standard is probably anachronistic for the Nikophorian period but again this is a "fantasy" army so I'm not too bothered.

Figure review

The figures are "bold" & stylised sculpts with very prominent details. They suit my preferred cartoon-like painting style. They were straightforward and quick to paint.

They are from the venerable Donnington "Originals" Romano-Byzantine range. Specifically, RBF01 (Officer), RBF02 (Standard Bearer), & RBF06 (Spearman).

Some filing and scalpel work was required in the main it was all straightforward. Mostly I just cleaned the various edges making them easier to paint. However, with the spearmen, I had to separate the spear and helmet which were joined by a little excess metal. Fortunately, the spear is robust and I didn't damage any of the spears.

Closing remarks

Once again I found these a joy to paint. It's a good job too! I have 32 more spearmen to paint. These will form the bulk of the heavy infantry of the army. As with the mounted commanders they bases felt reassuringly solid & heavy in the had (as commanders should).
