ADLG: Northern League (Leeds, 20 Mar 2022)

Sunday dawned bright and clear. I was up very early, for me at least, and met with Gareth Jones & Thrasyvoulos Drakoulis for the trip across the Pennines.

By the time we arrived at the Leeds Wargaming Club's excellent new premises (lucky people) I was almost awake and ready for the first game.

The first round of the Northern League had a medieval theme and I was taking my newly finished Muscovite Russian army for their first competition. The initial entrants are listed below but real life considerations meant that things were slightly different on the day:

15 mm Arab Light Horse Bow (Forged in Battle)

So far I've only painted infantry so it was time to paint some cavalry starting with some horse archers. These are just test pieces as Arab armies rarely contained horse archers until they started recruiting Turks during the later Abbasid period.

I had two "painting" reasons for trying some cavalry. Firstly to see what the Forged in Battle horses are like to paint. Secondly, to see how the horse colours alter the overall look of my muted colour palette.

Wargaming is ...

A recent question on the Society of Ancients forum set me thinking.  The question was: "How do you define wargaming?".  Most of the replies were quite long, and a bit serious, but it seemed to me that a few pithy replies might define my hobby better.  So here are my slightly tongue-in-cheek thoughts.

Wargaming is ...

• Something people do with toys.
• Niche and tribal.
• A way to pass lots of time.
• Something you talk about more than you do.
• Always good for an argument.
• A relatively cheap hobby that wargamers think is expensive.
• Something people like to spend their money on.
• Having a lot of unpainted & unused toys.
• Of inordinate monetary value (especially when selling off old toys on eBay).
• Something your partner approves of as it's "harmless".

15 mm Arab Javelin Men (Forged in Battle)

Progress on my new Dark Age army continues. This time it's some javelin armed light infantry (with medium infantry to follow soon).
