Just got back from the Post Office via Aldi where I bought a magnifier for a
tenner. I’ve not tried it seriously yet; but first impressions are
good.
I bought it because my eyes have been getting worse and I’m struggling to paint
with any fluency. The change is taking the enjoyment out of painting as I
can’t get in the “painting zone” that comes with fluency.
As you can see there’s a nice large 2x lens without a surround on a
bendy arm and two bluish LED lights if required. Very unobtrusive which
was part of the appeal. There a 4x insert lens for an extra boost if
required. The stand has both a clip and legs that pivot out. The latter
aren’t shown on the photo but they are very stylish and make the magnifier easy
about on the work bench. Finally there’s a nice cloth cover for the lens
to keep it clean and stop it getting scratched.
Last night I tried it out with some 15 mm figures I have on the painting
bench. The first thing to say is that it definitively easier. I was
appalled at how poor my painting looked when magnified. I then tried to
correct the worst of the errors. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it
was.
The small LED lights give a bluish light. I have never painted under
artificial light as I find it affects my colour choices and recently I have
needed a strong light source but I liked the lighting boost that the LEDs
provide. I might even try painting in the evening for the first time.
I’m fired up now and will be giving the magnifier an extended trial next
week. These have been on sale at Aldi since yesterday and there were only
two left in my store. Recommended for a tenner.
